The Cliff – Langkawi, Malaysia
For New Year’s Eve, the boyfriend and I decided to treat ourselves to a nice dinner since we had scrimped on our lodgings. We chose a lovely “expatriate” restaurant by Cenang Beach called The Cliff. That night they had a special set menu that cost us MYR360 inclusive of a bottle of wine. It was a pretty good deal.
We even got a nice table overlooking the sea and beach, even though the waiter told me he “could not promise a good seat due to overwhelming bookings”. We could even see people releasing lanterns with wishes on them. A beautiful sight.
The restaurant has a predominantly white crowd…or should I say red crowd as most of the white folk were sunburnt. The restaurant even provided a little goodie bag filled with partypoppers and noise makers to help us ring in the new year. The four course meal started with a bang with their first entree of strawberry shrimp, soft shell crab tempura and a poached scallop. Being on an island the seafood was incredibly fresh and pristine. The second starter was a nondescript ravioli filled with blue cheese with a side of sauteed tomatoes. Normally, I hate blue cheese, but your can’t even smell it in this ravioli and I was pleasantly surprised.
We had a choice between two mains. A grouper roulade or a steak and lamb rack. We had one of each. The roulade was very chewy and I think it was slightly underdone. The endives that came with the roulade were covered in olive oil, too much of it. My boyfriend’s steak and lamb was much better. Tender and flavoured with pepper sauce.
The dessert was a delicious pavlova with red fruit, a poached peach and a coconut and passionfruit mousse. No complaints about dessert for sure. From either of us.
After that we went on the beach to watch the fireworks go off around the island as it began to rain at midnight.
